Introduction

In this WebQuest, you will be researching carbon footprints and ways that you can help save the planet.  The basic steps to the project are found below:

  1. Find out what a "carbon footprint" is
  2. Calculate your own family's carbon footprint
  3. Set goals for lowering your carbon footprint

Follow the step-by-step directions below to complete the WebQuest. Be sure to read the steps carefully so that you don’t forget a part of the WebQuest. Any files needed for each example are located within the document for download.

Step 0: Download the Worksheet

  • Download the WebQuest: Carbon Footprint worksheet from here. 
  • Type your answers on the worksheet while completing Steps 1, 2 and 3.
  • When you are finished with the WebQuest, print out your document and show it to your teacher for approval.

Step 1: What is a Carbon Footprint?

  • Click on the link listed below for the website, "Time for a Change".
  • Read over the page and write a definition of "carbon footprint" on the WebQuest: Carbon Footprint worksheet.
  • Give three examples of activities listed on the website that produce carbon dioxide.

Step 2: The CO2 Effect

  • Click on the link listed below for the website, "CO2 Effect Mission Briefing" and then click on mission briefing button.
  • Read the information on each of the screens by clicking next and answer all questions on the WebQuest: Carbon Footprint worksheet.

Step 3: Your Family's Carbon Footprint

  • Discover you and your family’s carbon footprint.  Click on the link listed below for Nature.org's Carbon Footprint Calculator.
  • Complete the carbon footprint calculator exercise and using your answers from the Results Screen, fill in the appropriate section on Page 2 of the WebQuest: Carbon Footprint worksheet.
  • Next, compare your CO2 Emissions results with 3 other classmates. Write their emissions down on the worksheet.
  • Finally, complete the remaining Analysis Questions on the worksheet.

Step 4: What Can You Do About It?

  • Go to Page 3 of your WebQuest: Carbon Footprint worksheet.
  • In the first column, write down 2-3 ways that you are producing CO2.
  • In the second column, record a goal to reduce your carbon footprint in that area.  Besides writing WHAT your goal is, be sure to write WHEN you want to reach that goal
  • In the third column, include 2-3 realistic steps to reach your goal.  This is HOW you intend to complete your goal.


Step 5: Check, Print, and Submit

  • When you are finished the entire WebQuest: Carbon Footprint worksheet, check your answers for completeness, spelling and grammar.  If possible, try to get your entire finished WebQuest onto 3 pages.
  • Ensure your Name, Class, and Date are on the document.
  • Print your document, staple the pages together, and show it to your teacher.
